Ever since I was a little kid, I've had a soft spot for the World Wildlife Fund, or WWF. I can remember hearing about the work they did saving pandas, tigers and other endangered species, and of course this work still goes on.
These days they have a wide range of environmental campaigns active at any one time; not just conservation but also ecological issues such as global warming, and this is how last year I heard about "Earth Hour".
The concept is very simple; for one hour on one evening, you turn off your lights. Simple eh? Now for me, this was an easy thing to do - the amount of candles I have in the house, we were hardly fumbling around in the darkness! But the message is an important one because it shows we want action. It's not just homes that take part; last year the sign-up from big business and tourist attractions was incredible. If I remember right, global landmarks such as Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, and the Pyramids also turned off their lights for that hour.
Now an hour on a saturday evening isn't much of a sacrifice for most of us. You could put a film on, meditate, have a girlie night in, or get all romantic with the lights off for an hour - it makes you wonder if there are any "Earth Hour" babies out there in the world :) The important thing is that you show your support by signing up. You can do this by clicking on the little light switch dangling on the top right corner of this page - do you see it? Alternatively, you can go to http://earthhour.wwf.org.uk to find out more and hopefully you'll want to join in too.
